Incidents of school bullying, self-harm, and violence, including gun violence, are on the rise, according to a 2025 State of Student Safety Report by Lightspeed Systems. The report findings reveal critical trends in violence, bullying, self-harm, and other safety concerns within educational environments.
Key findings from the 2025 report found that violence and self-harm collectively accounted for over 80% of incidents identified through Lightspeed Alert and Lightspeed StopIt School Safety Intelligence tools.
Bullying is the most frequent incident category reported to Lightspeed StopIt, an anonymous reporting system for schools. Bullying, violence, and self-harm are “more connected than ever.” These are not separate problem buckets; they often co-occur among the same students or in the same situations. Lightspeed StopIt reported 19,398 bullying-related alerts or reports in 2025, often appearing alongside mental-health language or self-harm behavior.
